"Someone's Down in the Shower!"

Those are the words I heard earlier this morning at the gym coming from an elderly lady named Betty. In fact, I keep hearing those words resonating in my head. I know that about one person reads my blog, or so I've heard. My new step-dad told me last week he checks in regularly to see what I've posted. So, I guess this is just cathartic for me, getting it off my chest, writing about it. My hands are still shaking.

I was in the pool with about 25 other ladies. We were nearing the end of a water aerobics class. Betty is older, tall and has a boisterous personality and a loud voice. But she had a mortified look on her face as she peered out from the bank of showers and yelled out to those of us in the pool.

"Someone's down in the shower!"

I knew that we were dealing with a situation that needed immediate, urgent attention. Any of you who know me, know that in such instances, I don't think, I just react.

I pushed my way on over to the pool stairs muttering "come on Amy." My best friend was working out with me today. So, with friend in tow, I raced to the showers and entered the corridor. I expected to see one of the very elderly ladies who work out in the mornings lying in the aisle way on the floor. In my head I was thinking, brittle bones......try not do anything that could cause a fracture......call an ambulance and get the old gal onto a stretcher. But I saw nothing. At the opposite end of the showers I saw Betty standing there overlooking a shower stall with the door open.

What I saw was not what I expected, as I peered into the shower stall. I didn't see an elderly lady. I saw a gal about my age. (I'll be turning 40 in a couple months) And she was naked, lifeless and crumpled/wedged into the bottom of the stall. Her head/neck was wedged in an awful bend against the wall and her eyes were open and she was staring forward. She was completely lifeless.

Now, I know you aren't supposed to move a person who has fallen because there could be a neck or spinal injury. But in that instance I decided that breathing was the top priority. Those of you who know me know that I have issues with my wrists, elbows and shoulders and various other joints due to an autoimmune disorder. I've been using 2 pound barbells in the pool and have been considering going back down to one pounders since my elbows have been bothering me. But I was telling myself, 'you need to pick her up so she can breathe.' Fortunately, by this time, the adrenaline had kicked into overdrive and in a flash I was reaching down and grabbing her around her chest and lifting with all my might. As her head was relieved from the awful crink, she just popped back to life. She looked at me frightfully and I reassured her, "Honey, you passed out and I'm here to help you."

I assessed her the best I could. Her coloring was good. I checked her pupils. I didn't know if she had banged her head or not at this point. She told me that the last thing she remembered was turning off the water. She then told me that she thought it might be her sugar. I asked her if she was diabetic. She said no. I asked her if she had worked out on the gym floor. She told me she had done 40 minutes on one machine and 12 on another. I asked her if she had eaten anything today. She said no. I asked her if she had s0aked in the hot tub and she said yes. At this point, I was trying to cool her with wet towels on her forehead and get her blood sugar level up so we were in a mad dash to find something for her to eat. However, no one there had anything. Not even a cola. The machine vends water bottles and gatorade but the gatorade slot was empty. Finally, a lady came forward with two pieces of hard candy. So I unwrapped one and she popped it in her mouth. A few minutes later we got her to eat the second piece of candy. She perked up and we finally were able to get her to a standing position and get her into the locker room.

She was doing much better and after awhile I was able to leave her in the care of a gym employee and I returned back to the pool. The second class was about to start and the pool was packed. I lost my spot so resorted to swimming to a more secluded area in the deep end and just took a few deep breaths. I was shaking and felt like I just needed to go somewhere and cry. So, After a bit, I told Amy I just had to go shower off, get dressed and get back home. And so I write....

Pinewood Derby and the winner is Lightning McQueen!

My 6 year old son raced his very cool retro style version of Lightning McQueen in the Cub Scouts Pinewood Derby. Although his car didn't have the necessary speed to win, it had the necessary coolness factor to win the first place title of 'Coolest Race Car.' Woohoo! (As you can see, he had help from one of his papas.)

Project Impact - Quilts for Haitian Orphanages

Project Impact was a success! We gathered a group of gals (and some husbands) and kids, too, and over the course of 5 long, grueling days, we made exactly 100 quilts and 70 pin-free diapers that will be crated and taken down to a couple of orphanages in Haiti.

Lots of gals lended their sewing skills.

And we had some big boy helpers, too!

This is a sample of one of the -pin-free diapers.

I think people are just compelled to do something. Sending money is one thing, but making something tangible makes the process feel very personal and makes one feel very connected. We made the quilts and diapers in an assembly line fashion. We had several different stations. Some gals were on sewing machines. Others with no sewing skills were cutters. Some would cut batting and pin layers together. My good friend who spear-headed this project asked if her Baptist Church would open its doors and house our efforts. Our project was advertised on a local radio station. People were dropping in with fabric donations and others, strangers, just showed up with sewing machines in hand. There were several youths who made quilts and had their quilts on display for the congregation this past Sunday. There is a gentleman who belongs to an organization that helps adopt children out of a couple of Haitian Orphanages to American families. He received an SOS from Haiti that they were in dire need of blankets and pin-free, tie-style diapers for the babies and small children. (some of the babies have AIDS and they don't want those babies poked, thus the pin-free style) He will be taking a crate to Haiti in a couple weeks and hand-delivering the diapers. Thanks to everyone who is helping in whatever way they can to make a difference. If you can, make a donation to the Red Cross.

The headline in the news today was about the little 6 year old Colorado boy that untethered the family weather balloon/UFO project. The saucer-like milar, helium-filled, floating craft flew about 50 miles over the Colorado countryside. I'm sure every mother watching had a knot in her stomach. I know I did. I have a six year old precocious little know-it-all boy. The thought that a little boy like my little guy might be in that balloon just gave me an ulcer. Not long after the aircraft landed in the farmer's freshly plowed field, and yielded no little person, my little person got off the school bus. When he came in the house, I hugged him for several minutes. Yes, it annoyed him and he was yelling for me to put him down, but I just told him that he was my baby and I was going to have to hold him forever. Well, I did have to put him down. And a couple hours later, the little Colorado boy was found hiding in a box in the garage attic. You gotta love those little 6 year olds.....

I lived in Nassau County outside of Queens on Long Island for a couple years back in the late 90s. I have a quirky best friend who is a big fan of The Wiz. I surprised her when she visited me out there once. I found a way, way, way off Broadway (community theatre production) in Far Rockaway of The Wiz. What a hoot. We sat in the audience singing along to most of the songs. So, I'm tickled to have my Wicked Witch of the West fabric print featured in this Treasury. Thank you LeeBeads!

Tooth Fairies and Toofy Doodles

Well, we were driving to the park when my six year old son loudly proclaimed that his wiggly tooth fell out! He held it up proudly and quickly showed me his bloody stumped pearl and then, just as fast, popped it back in his mouth again.

"No! Don't put it back in your mouth!! It's not candy!!!" Said I. I could just envision the hysteria that would ensue if the tooth was accidentally swallowed. This tooth fairy isn't dumpster diving into poop piles in search of a tooth that is about the size of an eighth of a tic tac.

"I can't believe I lost a tooth!" He just kept repeating it and giggling. Like it was a rite of passage into first grade. This is the third tooth he's lost now. He lost the first two teeth about a year ago, not long after he started kindergarten. He can't wait to tell the kids in his class tomorrow at school and proudly display his new gap. The innocence of the moment was quickly squelched when he asked if we could stop off at the McDonald's (right next to the park) to get an apple juice box so he could drink the juice and hopefully counteract the taste of blood in his mouth. He's such a little man.

We carefully brought the tooth home. (I knew if we dropped it, we would never find it) My gosh, it's the dinkiest little toofy-doodle. That's what we call teeth around here. Well, that's what I call teeth around here. Toofy-doodles. He placed the little gem in a ziploc baggie. Somehow the tooth did make it to its final resting place under his pillow. I checked just a few minutes ago and made the switch. A crumpled up dollar bill now has a new home under his pillow.

I'm sure in the morning I will hear all about the big plans he has in spending that dollar. New match box car, no doubt.

New Halloween Lip Balms by Vintage Bella Body

Well, there's a story behind the new 'Pumpkin Butt' Lip Balm. A couple weeks ago, I moseyed on into the Vintage Bella Body Lip Balm Lab and was overpowered not by the usual confectionery or fruity scents, but by the smell of, well, OK......I wandered in and asked "why does this room smell like a**?" (rhymes with crass) I was informed that the smell was our new Halloween lip balm scent of pumpkin pie spices. My response was, well, "We can't sell that..... it smells like the back end of a used toilet paper roll!!!!" The balms had already been poured into tubes. So what was I to do?

I told the story to a couple of friends and they thought the scent was hysterical. In fact, not only did they think I should still market and sell this obnoxious scent, but they each wanted a dozen or so, to hand out to the losers that cross their paths. One of my good friends responded with: "I want to gift them to all the butt heads that enter my life. For example, the annoying person in wal-mart check out, the rude person at the gas station who sits and eats their lunch at the pump or how about that person who doesn't read your ebay listing descriptions."

So, we bring you - PUMPKIN BUTT Lip Balm! Let all the buttheads moisten their (pumpkin) pie holes!!!! I have to be honest, once the lip balms cooled down, the scent no longer smelled like the sludge from the bottom of an outhouse. The scent is kind of a rugged, nutty, spicy, pumpkin pie kind of scent. Not for the faint of heart! I dare you to try it!!!

Traveling Trunk Show Sisterhood - OUR BIG SHOW!

The trunk show was a success! We had 7 wonderful vendors set up shop and sell despite the rain! The sisterhood was united and fun and friendship prevailed!

The Queen of Re also had an indoor area to sell her wonderful handmade denim purses and piles of old quilts and sewing supplies. There was too much rain to keep the trunk show entirely outside.

There were gourmet treats by Mom's Cookies! Her snicker cookies were to die for!

My Mom sold her line of Sophia's Saponata Old World Soaps. Her booth was lovely and smelled amazing.

The Queen of Nostalgia sold very unique, vintage-inspired treasures.

The Poet's Daughter sold unique Halloween items that were flying off the shelf!

The Buzz sold a line of wonderful accessories!

There was rain!

Medium Sized Vinyl Banner

Well, my new vinyl banner is featured above. It's a 10 oz. vinyl and has crisp, vivid color. It measures 4' x 2.5'. The photo above shows it just after I unrolled it and it's being held up by the top 2 corners by my son and husband. I ordered a set of plastic tabs for the corners so it can be tied down. However, they have not yet been applied in the photo above. I'll be using this banner at my booth when I vend at quilt shows and at the farmer's markets and art fairs. I can design these full-color custom banners and have them printed with your business information too. They come in three sizes: 3' x 1 .6', 4' x 2.5', and 6' x 2.5'. Well, every night when we go to sleep we leave the tv on and on 'mute.' I had stayed up late watching an episode of "Mystery Diagnosis" on the Health Channel, so it was still set on that channel when I muted the tv and went to sleep. At some point in the wee morning hours our little boy (just finishing up kindergarten) crawled into our bed while we were sleeping. At about 4am, I awoke to a little boy's voice stating: "I just saw a baby come out of a Mommy's tummy." Terrific. So much for teaching him the cabbage patch theory.

Vinyl Banner

I'm selling vinyl banners now. The Queen of Re placed her order and received her banner yesterday. She was so kind to send me photos. It's a 6' x 2.5' vinyl full-color banner and it looks phenomenal judging by the photos. She will be using her banner when she vends at trunk shows. Thanks again for sharing, her Majesty! I will be listing these custom banners soon in my etsy store.

Vintage Luggage

My good friend Hope, also known as "The Queen of Re" http://www.thequeenofre.com/ is known for re-purposing, re-using, re-cycling and a whole mess of other "re" words. She has a fabulous collection of literally hundreds of pieces of terrific vintage luggage. We bartered and I was able to acquire a mess of these terrific old Samsonites in the blue and green shades. I will be using them for displays for when I vend and do trunk shows. I still have to clean them up but don't they look great!!!!?? We have a trunk show coming up in July and I can't wait to use them!!!!!

My "Marie Antoinette" line of balms are so much fun and smell worthy of the finest silver fork, but are zero calorie - and no flatware needed!

This is a favorite that I sell at the Farmer's Market! The lavender essential oil within keeps the bugs away and also helps with rough, cracked or irritated skin. And so fun to make! I love working with the products that go in the tins. Makes me feel like a mad scientist!!!

Glass Pendants

This beautiful gift set was assembled by me and the pendant was made by my friend Sharon of www.HaberHeartwork.etsy.com . She makes the loveliest glass pendants. If you like this design (same gal/illustration from my solid lotion bar packaging,) you can order one from her. These lovely little gift sets sold like crazy for the Mother's Day crowd last minute shoppers a couple weeks ago!

Solid Lotion Bars in Pretty Tins

So, I was at the local Farmer's Market and my new cocoa butter and shea butter solid lotion bars were a huge hit! I have two different bars - old button designs. I just love these molds! And the bars are such a rich golden color and smell of rich beeswax and cocoa butter. You rub the bar around in your hands and work the lotion into your skin. Within a half hour the oils soak into your pores and then -- smooth, silky softness. I will get the photos posted in my etsy store and sell them there soon. And I love this Marie Antoinette -ish, rococo beauty.
